Petworth/Wisborough Green baptism record 1773
« on: Monday 03 January 22 20:43 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for a baptism record of William Reed/Reid/Read born approximately 1773.

1851 census gives his place of birth as Wisborough Green/Petworth.

Would be grateful if anyone could check the parish records for him.

Many thanks,

Anna

Did William have any children? oftentime children will be named after the parents' parents. could maybe give someone a hand looking for a baptism. Also maybe any occupations in the family.

Thanks for your quick reply and advice.

William Reed was a weaver. He had 4 children: William, Eliza, James and George.

I think his parents may have been William and Ann. I’m getting this from someone’s ancestry tree but they have no evidence of this so just wanted to check to see if this is correct.

there is two i could find on findmypast that might be of interest to you  :)

William Reed - baptised 4 Jun 1775 - Buxted, Sussex - parents William and Mary

William Reeds - baptised 22 Jun 1777 - West Dean by Seaford, Sussex - parents George and Ann

there is lots of births with the name william reed in this timeframe but these two seem to be in the right area and similar names

West Dean is closest, Buxted is further away towards Hayward’s Heath but worth exploring all records  :)

There is a William Read bp 12/5/1769 at Petworth to a Robert & Elizabeth Read in the SFHG records.

None of the other spellings at Petworth or any at all at Wisborough.

I did notice another spelling of Read though - Rede, to include in future searches.
