Police in New South Wales
« on: Wednesday 05 January 22 06:47 GMT (UK) »
Good evening all,

Apparently Michael Langan and his brother James Langan, both born in County Sligo, Ireland, were in the police force of New South Wales.
I have found James' death and his burial (with his wife Agnes) in the Field of Mars Cemetery.
Apart from James' death (and his wife's death) I have not found anything else in Trove or in BDM's New South Wales.
I must have lost any skills I may have held in finding information.
Any hints most welcome
Jean Price

Where do you see them described as being in thee police force?

When would they have been in the police force?

There is a James LANGAN born Ireland who is a police constable in Queensland. Numerous mentions of him on trove - this one says he is native of Ireland and been in Australia for 20 years (in 1932). Does this fit with your James?

Search for "constable james langan", "constable j langan" etc.

Modified to add:
I see from the passenger list associated with the trip to Ireland mentioned in the above article their ages:
James 50 and Agnes 49 (in 1932).

I see that a James LANGAN married Agnes ROGERS on 8 Sept 1919 in Queensland. (1919/B/23494)

There is a death notice for Kathleen DAVIES nee ROGERS, native of Co. Tyrone, sister of Agnes (Mrs LANGAN) in Gladesville in May 1949.

Is this a possibility for your James?

A Michael LANGAN (brother of James) died in November 1915 in Sydney, numerous articles including this one:
http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article15624512
(though Michael is a grocer)

From the death index his parents were Michael and Mary.

I'm guessing this is the family at Cartronplank, Cliffony North, Sligo in 1901:
Michael Langan   60    Head, farmer
Mary Langan      40    Wife
James Langan    18    Son
Annie Langan    17    Daughter
Michael Langan   15    Son
John Langan           13    Son

Thank you to you all for the research you have done and the information you have found.
I will have to get back to my informant - who is the great grand nephew of these two Langan men. (and he lives in Canada). And he is going from stories told to him.

Maddys52 you were right with the family in the 1901 Irish Census.

I will now see what my Canadian informant has to say about all of this.

Again Thank You.
