James and Catherine Nicholl
« on: Thursday 06 January 22 00:13 GMT (UK) »
hi all  :) im just looking for a bit of advice on the following records in order to add/rule some out as im not quite sure what is relevant at this stage.

my ancestors James Nicholl and Catherine Gormley married in 1846.
https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633486#page/39/mode/1up

im honestly not sure how many children they had.

my direct ancestors was Sarah Nicholl, born abt 1848 (i dont have any record for this)

these are records i think could be their children:

thomas nichols- http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r5o/

isabella nicholson - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r5p/

catherine nicholl - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r5q/

mary anne nicholl - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r5r/ (correct date for sarah - but the name)

daniel nicholson - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r5s/

sarah anne nicholl - http://www.rootschat.com/links/01r5t/ - this is the one ive thought could be sarah, but considering she married in 1867 i doubt it.

i really just want to clarify the details on this branch of my tree, if anyone has any advice or suggestions on what to do next itd be appreciated :)

You need to be extremely careful that you don't end up attaching children from another family as mother's surname isn't listed in all records.
Following the marriage in 1846 have you looked at the baptisms for other children in the registers?
Baptisms 1 Jan. 1832 to 31 Dec. 1848, Baptisms 3 Jan. 1847 to 14 Mar. 1858, etc.

When Sarah married in 1867 what is listed for her residence & father's occupation? what about the witnesses- could they be related to her?

This Catherine Nicholl bapt.1860- possible marriage 1880?
https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/display-pdf.jsp?pdfName=st_andrews_mf_1838-1880_ma_0605
Bride's address is 4 Holles Row. Image badly filmed but her surname looks more like Nickel.
The civil record gives more information such as her father was dead.

Going back and forth between civil & church records you can build small family trees before lumping everyone together. Pay particular attention to addresses.

thanks for the advice.

I do think the marriage you have shown is that of Sarah's sister Catherine. I think James Nicholl passed in 1877 so it would make sense for him to be deceased in 1880

james nicholl passed 1877: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1877/020549/7210983.pdf

i also think this marriage is one of sarah's brothers. Especially as the witness is a sarah nicholl and one of the addresses mentioned is holles row.

james and eliza dowling 1871:
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1875/11212/8109686.pdf

neither of the witnesses on sarahs marraige cert seem to be related to her, but i suppose id have to look into possible sister marrying a murray/clarke.

The James who died in 1877 was a shoemaker- does this really fit with James being a labourer? If this is the correct James then have you tried searching for wife Catherine? Does 23 Winetavern St. have any other links to the family?

I saw the other marriage but it was the bride from Holles Row not the groom.

ah sorry - i forgot to mention. on Sarah's marraige in 1867 she is a boot binder and so is he. i think this would probably fit with the more general term of shoemaker. no other family in winetavern st but sarah later lived in cook st + wood quay which are both just beside it so i suppose in the right area.

ive also come across this marriage a few times and thought it could be related. wood quay is relativley close to where they lived + it was exactly where sarah lived. with an isabella nicholl as a witness.

anne nicholl + james dennison 3 jun
