John Meledy 86th regiment
« on: Friday 07 January 22 15:32 GMT (UK) »
hi, im researching this branch of my family tree and in 1866 my ancestor John Meledy appears as a witness in a court case as he was in the same regiment as the person being convicted. it was the 12th company of the 86th regiment and his service number was 361.

I was just wondering where i would be able to find any more information on this, other articles say that he was in the army 25 Jun 1855 - May 1860 when he purchased his discharge. I was hoping there might be some records to do with it, i doubt it but i figured id ask.

It looks like his army papers haven't survived. As he didn't go on to pension there would have been no reason to retain them.

The National Archives have the collection below, but it's too early for your chap.

Discharge dates 1817-1829
Soldiers who purchased their discharge (and would therefore not have received a pension)
in WO 25/3845-3847

Just an aside to what your query was, if you go onto findmypast in the Ireland Petty Court Sessions records there are loads of records pertaining to John Meledy between approx 1860-1910.These records cover many areas of Ireland (as you didn't specify exactly where your John was from). It may be worth a look. Kim
