Hitchcocks/Pugh family
« on: Saturday 08 January 22 17:46 GMT (UK) »
Dorothy May Pugh b.1895 married Henry Hitchcocks 1919 in Birmingham. I am her granddaughter. I have her birth certificate which states she was born in Birmingham in 1895 parents Samuel Pugh and Mary Elizabeth Pugh formerly Pugh.
I can trace her on 1901 and 1911 census living with a Samuel Pugh but no record of her mother with them. I know she had step brother Harry Turner and step sister Rose Turner which ties in with 1911 census . My query is that I can find no birth or death details for her mother and/ or Samuel Pugh. Samuel gives his place of birth differently on each census. He seems not to have married Harriet Turner ( nee Perkins) whom he was living with in 1911 and I cannot find a date of death for Harriets first husband Henry ( sometimes Harry) Turner. Could anyone help untangle the mystery of my grandmothers parentage. Thanks

Hello and welcome to Rootschat.
Not only does Samuel Pugh have a different birthplace in 1901 and 1911 censuses, his calculated year of birth is quite different too. On Dorothy's marriage record, he made his mark as a witness, so someone must have filled in the 1911 census return for him, so may not be accurate.
If the information on 1901 census is correct, a possible birth reg is Samuel Harry Pugh Q4 1863 Shoreditch Vol 1C page 150. mother's maiden name Foulcher. If he was born in London abt 1852,
I can't see a birth in Gloucester which matches either birth year.
