York industrial school
« on: Saturday 08 January 22 18:04 GMT (UK) »
Looking for records of my Mother (Maria Whiteley) who was at York Industrial School for Girls in 1921. Wondered if any records are available showing were she went when left and what date she arrived and left.
Thanks
Tony

Hi Tony

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

In case you haven't come across this link, this gives you a comprehensive background to the school www.childrenshomes.org.uk/YorkGirlsIS/

There is a reference there to the York City Archives as a source of possible info which would be worth you contacting to see what their holdings may be.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat, if you have access to Ancestry it might be worth looking for a matching Family tree, it may hold information that you don't have.

It is likely to be well worth investigating York City Archives. I can only speak from experience of the Essex Industrial School, where my GGF and his brother spent several years, but Essex Records Office have all the registers and many other documents for EIS. The admissions registers have been digitised and are accessible through Essex Archives on subscription. I had to order copies of the information in the discharge registers, as they have not been digitised, but they are a goldmine of information. The school kept in touch with the boys for several years after their discharges, and there are a lot of notes about their addresses, who they were living with, who they were working for and where, standards of dress, literacy and numeracy, return visits to the school, etc.

Hopefully you will find that York have something similar ;)

You could try the Borthwick Institute in York they hold info on lots of the old schools and homes in York.
