Monumental Inscriptions of St Lawrence in Ramsgate
« on: Sunday 09 January 22 03:17 GMT (UK) »
I've been referencing the Monumental Inscriptions taken from the book published in 1895 by Charles Cotton, entitled  History & Antiquities of the Church and Parish of St Laurence, and also transcribed here on the KAS website.

https://www.kentarchaeology.org.uk/research/monumental-inscriptions/ramsgate

I think I'm asking the obvious, but would like to double-check regarding the headstones (with numbers) and families they belong to - in particular headstone entries 184, 185 and 186.

184. Jeremiah PHILPOTT died 24th November 1717 aged 54 years. Also Elizabeth, wife of above, died 9th October 1747 aged 85 years.

185. George, son of George and Elizabeth PHILPOTT, died February 19th 1746 aged 21 years. Elizabeth, daughter of George Philpott, died 20th December 1769 aged 81 years.

186. Mary Philpott died 16th February 1774 aged 82 years.

In the case of headstone 185, it mentions George, son of George and Elizabeth. And then Elizabeth daughter of George.

My interpretation for headstone 185 is that son George and daughter Elizabeth had the same father, but a different mother.

Although the 3 headstones (184, 185, and 185) don't necessarily relate to each other.

Does this sound right?

Note: The KAS website includes the following intro text from page 129:
"For the sake of reference, every stone has a distinct number, which will be found to contain its own group of inscriptions."

Elizabeth died 1769 age 81 making her birth circa 1688

George son of George and Elizabeth died 1746 age 21 so born circa 1725

If the father George were born circa 1665 and married circa 1686-1687 was widowed and married again it would make him 60 at the birth of son George in 1725.

The women in the family lived long lives but Jeremiah dies at 54 and George Jr. at 21

Notes
There is a George Philpot son of Jeremie and Elizabeth bap St Lawrence 20 September 1688
Elizabeth 29 July 1690
Mary 5 March 1692 (transcription not known if old style or new style)

At the moment it looks as if Mary and Elizabeth are the daughters of Jeremie/Jeremiah

Mary who died 1774 left a will, she was quite well off and a spinster.
It's on ancestry PCC Wills.
*May be available through the National Archives for free.

Admin is to her nephew John Cougar
Her sister Martha wife of William ???  I need help reading his surname.
Jeremiah and William sons of sister Martha ?
niece Mary Cougar wife of John
niece Elizabeth wife of Jeremiah Fa ?? (surname again) to be her money only
Servant Elizabeth White

She is very concerned with the care of her sister Martha.
--------------
Her possible sister Elizabeth has died 1769 should the gravestone have said sister to George and not daughter.

So far..
Mary's sister Martha Philpot married William Neverd in 1732 and live in Essex
Mary baptised 05 Mar 1692, St Lawrence (from inscription 186)
Martha Nervard nee Philpott baptised 23 Nov 1696, St Lawrence (from Mary's Will)

Parents for these sisters are Jeremiah and Elizabeth are from the inscription on headstone 184

Jeremiah/Elizabeth did have a George baptised 20 Sep 1688 and an Elizabeth baptised 29 Jul 1690

Headstone 185 still has me stumped for the moment... I'll need to sleep on it
