Please could somebody tell me: Is this a Navy uniform??

Hi,

Is anybody able to tell me what this uniform might be? I assume it is something to do with the Navy, because of the style of hat, and also the picture was taken in Plymouth, but other than that, I don't know.

Also, can anybody guess from the style how old this picture might be? My Aunt tells me it might be another picture of my 2xGt Grandad H. Bailey as a young man (see my other posting), but to me the picture looks too old. I am probably wrong though!  If that is the case, why might a man move from the Navy to the Army?

Hi Millerina,

Its the same as your other photo, he's in the KORL regt, I would say about 1900 when going to the Boer War.

Hi Millerina,
The style of photo fits with the date that mack has given you.  I think the overpainting makes it look older.

Thank you very much for clarifying that for me.

I thought I could make out the little lion emblem on his collar, the only thing that still puzzles me is the shape of the hat beside him, to me it looks like the typical style hat that you see people in the Navy wearing, was it normal for a soldier to have a hat like that? Or might it have been put there for display, or am I just being really thick and it is a perfectly normal soldiers hat??!

I think you are probably right, I think it is the over painting that has made me think it was older than it is, looking at my other pictures of him, I would guess that 1900 is probably about the right year.

Sorry to pester you all again, 

Is anybody able to tell me, would the uniform that he is wearing in this picture be the uniform he fought in, or would it be a special dress uniform for the picture? Only I have spent a bit of time online reading up on the Boer war, and the only thing I can find about the red uniform is that it was worn during the First Boer War in 1880, I can't find anything about it being worn in the Second Boer War, which is when the picture probably dates from.

millerina,the cap is normal dress,he wouldnt fight in that uniform,he would be in a khaki uniform in the boer war,the photo was probably taken around the time of the boer war ,mack
