Hi,

Would anyone be able to look up a pub in the 1920's please?. I wanted to find out the name of the pub and who was the owner in 1925. The address is 40 Walkergate, Berwick Upon Tweed. The owner/co owner in 1921 was Bridget Staugroom according to the 1921 census, so wanted to see if she was still running it in 1925.

Thanks
Becky

The name of the pub at 40 Walkergate, Berwick upon Tweed was the Cobbled Yard Hotel -- it closed it's doors in 2018

The link below will take you to a 'lost pubs' site where you will find a photograph of it.

Thanks. Would that have been it's name in 1925?

OK, the 1921 Census has incorrectly transcribed her surname -- her surname is actually STANGROOM

The 1911 Census shows that she was the publican at 40 Walkergate, Berwick upon Tweed -- at that time the pub was called The Rose and Thistle

Bridget died on the 5th February 1927 and the National Probate Calendar shows that she was still at the Rose and Thistle.

Hope this helps you. :)

Looks like her daughter's death later in 1927?

Berwick News and General Advertiser
05 July 1927, page 4 col 1

Berwick Lady's Death

The death has occurred of Mrs Pattison, wife of Mr Clement Pattison, of the Rose and Thistle, Berwick. Before her marriage, she was a Miss Stangroon, daughter of the former proprietor of the Rose and Thistle. Mrs Pattison was formerly a school-teacher in the St Cuthbert's school, and was a member of the St Cuthbert's Catholic choir for over twenty years.
She was a well known soloist, and took the principal part in practically every Mass held at the Catholic Church during the last few years.

Marriages Q3 1919 Berwick
has a Maria Stangroom and a Clement Pattison on the same page

and there is a lengthy report in the Berwick News and General Advertiser 30 June 1903 page 6 cols 4 - 6
"Charge against a Berwick Publican"
where Bridget Stangroom  was on trial for alleged receipt of stolen goods, she seems to have been found not guilty
