1921 Census: Army in India
« on: Tuesday 11 January 22 10:55 GMT (UK) »
I have been trying to trace my grandfather who was based in India in 1921.
I have a photograph of him and his fellow Sergeants and Warrant Officers of the 5th Royal Irish Lancers in Risalpur, North-West Frontier, India

Percy Willy Freeman
Born 1884 in Dublin, Ireland and died in 1965 in the UK.
Squadron Sergeant Major
5th Royal Irish Lancers

He was accompanied by:
Elizabeth Mary Ellen Freeman, wife and school teacher with the Regiment.
Vivienne Mary Freeman, Daughter.
Alexander Charles Desmond Freeman, son.

I have tried "Findmypast" which has sole access to the 1921 Census of the military abroad but have been unable to locate them.
Risalpur is in the Records under Piece 28120.

Has anyone had any success in tracing a military relative abroad in the 1921 Census?

All help is appreciated.

I was playing around the other day and got quite a few pages that had no names or places and just stated army on the results page.  Fortunately the family I was looking for were back home in Croydon

Do you have his army records from MoD? What regiment did he transfer to when 5th Lancers was disbanded in 1921?

Army Records lost in a fire!
He transferred to the Ayrshire Yeomanry as an Instructor in 1922.

Tony

I found him in India, along with other members of his Regiment in A Squadron.
Thanks for your help.

I wonder where his family is recorded?
Prehaps it was only the Army memebers were the ones recorded for some reason?

It was a large amount of WW1 records lost in the fire in WW2, you say your man was in the Army in 1921/2 so his records will still be with the MOD.

See here to apply for his records.
