Charles Nathaniel McCaull, Surgeon b abt 1828 Ireland

Looking for a birth certificate, or other documents related to a Charles Nathaniel McCaull b Abt 1828 in Ireland, d Whittelsey, Cambridgeshire, 1872

He is described in The London and Provincial Medical Directory, 1865,  p 431, Wilton, Salisbury Wiltshire, thus:
Charles Nathaniel McCAULL, M.R.C.S. England 1849; L.S.A. 1863; (R.C.S. Ireland)

It would appear he spent some time, as the first house surgeon at the Adelaide Hospital, South Australia in 1851, as evidenced in the following article:

I also post the clipping with this thread. I am speculating that this is him as there are not that many by the name of "Charles Natahniel McCaull" who were surgeons at the time

I cannot find any travel documnets for him to Australia.

After that (I allege, if it is the same person) he returned to England, worked in Wiltshire in 1865 and later in Whittlesey, Fenland District, Cambridgeshire before passing away at Whittlesey on 21st aged 44 years. He is mentioned in the 1869 Post Office Directory of Cambs, Norfolk & Suffolk (Pt 1/ Cambridgeshire) as profession: surgeon, in Whittlesey.

I am speculating a person whom I suspect is his brother (my great-great grandfather), Henry Michael McCaull, engineer, (b 1827 Kingstown (aka Dunleary or Dun Laoghaire), Dublin, Ireland - 1894 Wellington, New Zealand) followed him to Australia and settled in Melbourne in Jul 1854, on the ship "Miles Barton" sailing from Liverpool. Henry Michael McCaull's father was Michael McCaull of Killiney Co Dublin Ireland, a School Master; his mother was Mary Ann Ferrall also of Killiney, Co Dublin, Ireland; Mary Ann's father was Luke Ferrall, b abt 1776 d 7 Jan 1855 • Killiney Co Dublin Ireland; Luke had a son, Rev Charles Whitworth Ferrall (1820 County Dublin, Ireland - 1890, Uppingham, Rutland, England).

Henry Michael McCaull's birthplace is from the NZ death index. Parents names are from his marriage cerificate (1859, North Melbourne, to Mary McDonald 1840-1818), of which I have a copy.

I am trying to evaluate if indeed, as I suspect, Henry Michael and Charles Nathaniel McCaull were brothers.

Henry Michael McCaull's first born son was also named CHARLES NATHANIEL MCCAULL, b 1860 in Geelong, Victoria; which is why I am quite interested to know if indeed Henry Michael & Charles Nathaniel snr (1828-1872) are related as brothers (or otherwise).

His birth predates civil registration in Ireland by many years (1864) so you need to look for a baptism and for that, you will need to know his religion.  If you can find your Henry's baptism, it may narrow down where to look for Charles'.

He appears in the 1861 English census in Bloomsbury, St. George -- Charles N. McCaull, MCS England -- not practicing; born in Co. Dublin, Ireland.

Was "Pen." abbreviation for pensioner meaning ordinary undergraduate, as used by Cambridge University, or for pension meaning boarder at inclusive rates?

So he was an elementary school teacher. Maybe a national school?

Catholic registers Kingstown parish in National Library of Ireland microfilmed collection. Baptisms 1793-1834, marriages 1769-1834. Some runs of years overlap so may need to look in more than 1 register. Those are early starts for Catholic registers. I attended Mass in a hotel in Killiney when there was no church.

Ludi magister = primary school (national school) teacher

Generosus = Gentleman

Pen. = pensioner = ordinary undergraduate
