Victoria Mary Brooks née Harwood
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 10:43 GMT (UK) »
Victoria Mary Brooks née Harwood born 2/4 1887 Thakeham
Married Ernest Brooks 2/4 1906 Thakeham
Children
Cecily b 2/4 1908 East Preston
Dora L b 2/4 1914 Thakeham
Victoria E 1/4 1915 Thakeham
Phyllis E 3/4 East Preston
Phyllis was my mother but when I checked both 1911 Southsea Portsmouth and 1921 Littlehampton censuses none of the children appear. Ernest died in 1915 and Victoria Mary in the 1921 had gone back to her maiden name.
Any ideas ?

Welcome to Rootschat  :)

I don’t think the 1908 birth is the same family. Do you have a birth?

Have you checked 1911 for the number of children born?

Victoria died end of July / early August 1967 and was buried at Littlehampton Cemetery on the 8th August 1967. The  England & Scotland, Select Cemetery Registers, 1800-2016 (held on Ancestry) records that she was a Widow living at 69 Horsham Road, Littlehampton. Her grave number is GL146 (consecrated ground)

Death of Ernest Brooks:

WEST SUSSEX GAZETTE 10th JUNE 1915

'Ernest Brooks, poor fellow, who had been lying seriously ill for a long time, died on the 27th ult. A happy release for him, his friends say, as he suffered greatly. Brooks had a brilliant career in the Navy but was discharged mentally unfit for further service. Although he did not complete his full time, he was given a full pension and also a gratuity of £25. He was buried on the 31st and a large Union Jack was used as the pall

The following week, the same newspaper made a correction to the pension value and gratuity.

Full Royal Navy service record held on Ancestry. Shows his date of birth (15 May 1874) and a physical description of him as well as all of the ships and shore bases he served on. He served from 13 October 1893 to 4 December 1913.
