1921 Census
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 13:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I've been researching my husbands tree.  His grandfather Arthur Beckett was born in 1904 in Leicester.  I've found him on the 1911 census (with his mother's maiden name as surname), and on the 39 register.

I can't find him on the 1921 census but have found an Arthur Beckett but his birth year is 1901.  His address is York House, Wigston Magna, in the Army Infantry.  The census page has other soldiers on.  2 questions really, could he have lied about his age to get in the army and does anyone know what this York House was.  I'm probably barking up the wrong tree but any advice or info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Elaine

Presumably this is his birth  :-\

BECKETT, ARTHUR   mmn    OSBORNE
1904  June Quarter in LEICESTER  Volume 07A  Page 230

There was an Arthur William Beckett bn Leicester 1901  :-\
ADDED He is on 1921 so we can discount him

I checked on the census for Arthur W, he is living with his parents Arthur and Lilian on the 1921 census, my Arthur's parents are Elizabeth (Osborne) and Henry/Harry.

I found his mother on the 21 census who by this time has remarried (Northern) living with her mother (Mary Osborne) with Arthurs younger brother and sister, who interestingly have Osborne as their surname, not Beckett.

Regarding his age, he may well have lied when he enlisted, a lot of young men did.

I don’t know anything about York House, it may just be where they were billeted.  Google only show a modern building as student accommodation, it could be on the site of the original house, but that is simply a suggestion.

It looks like there are nearly 500 people listed at "York Home" in the 1921 census. Possibly it was part of Glen Parva barracks.
