McConnell/Caulfields - Kilmacrenauor, Letterkenny and Raphoe
« on: Thursday 13 January 22 15:17 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for help in finding out about Denis McConnell and his family. He was my 3rd great-grandfather and was born about 1851. The only child of his I know about is my 2nd great grandmother, Margaret McConnell born around 1873 who married Hugh Caulfield: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1887/10810/5942626.pdf

I found Denis McConnell in a 1901 Irish Cenus for Kilmacrenauor Asylum Rd., Letterkenny Town where he was living with the Caulfields: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Donegal/Letterkenny_Town/Kilmacrenauor_Asylum_Rd_/1188455/

It says he was a widower but I can't find who his wife was or when he got married. I would also like to find out if Denis had more children and also where Hugh Caufield was from and if he had any siblings. It says on the marrige certificate of Hugh Caulfield and Margaret McConnell that he had no residence and was a tinsmith so not as easy tracking him down  other than his father was Patrick Caulfield and he was born about 1861 going by his age on the census records if the age is correct.

I also only know about three of Hugh Caulfield and Margaret McConnells children, Alice, Denis and Sarah. Denis was a soldier and was killed in France on 9 Sep 1916 and Alice is my great grandmother and married Michael McGaughey in 1919: https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1919/09674/5508455.pdf

In 1911 the Caulfields were living in The Close, Raphoe: http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Raphoe/The_Close/506623/

I don't know what happened to their children Michael, Mary, Annie and Maggie beyond the Census records. Can anyone help?

If Margaret's age is correct on census then it's unlikely her father was born only 12 years before her.

Have you searched R.C. parish registers yet? you might uncover other children, etc.

Thanks. I haven't seen that yet so I will check that out. I got the date wrong, it was about 1873 Margaret McConnell was born, not 1863 so I have edited my original post to correct that.

Poor transcription  ???
It says Kilmacrenan or Asylum Road

Here's the County Lunatic Asylum on GeoHive (Historic 25" map)

Scroll down to view Kilmacrenan Road on the left.

Do you have Margaret's birth registration? it will list name of her mother as well as exact place of birth. From that information other searches can be made to find siblings, parents' marriage, etc.

....but in the 1911 census, Maggie is 48 so born c1863.
(see the link in your first post)
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Donegal/Raphoe/The_Close/506623/

If she was born in 1873, she would be only 14 when she married in 1887.

I kept thinking I may have had birth years wrong, should have double checked.

One of the dead children you haven't mentioned was Hugh- (7 Nov.1902 Letterkenny-29 Apr.1903 Letterkenny)

Other dead child was Patrick- (12 Apr.1898 Oldtown-5 July 1898 Letterkenny)

A Mary O'Freddy is witness at Alice's wedding. This was her sister Mary- child born 1917-

Thanks for the help,much appreciated

The bad news is that if Margaret was born before 1864 there will be no birth certificate which would have been useful in finding her mother's name.
