Seems that there could be a link to Canada, as the 5th probably lived there.  That would be more logical concerning a "visit."

In addition, the writer also finds herself in London as a tourist, and the name Balduin must ring a bell with some.

In fact, these letters are in the hands of the USA Army with the intent of finding the ancestors, in order to hand them over.  The person doing the work asked for advice concerning the name.

His public engagements in 1835 seem to be well-documented in newspaper articles at the BNA.

Thanks Alan...  Hadn't thought about that.  As the Officer doing the research is in America, she probably doesn't have access to the Archive.  I'll ask her.

This one was written...  'Georgetown Dec 15th, 1835.'   Seems improbable that the British Newspapers were interested.

West Kent Guardian 19th December 1835

[This snippet is from a page of reports from abroad, and was also published in several other newspapers]

The Right Hon. the Earl of Selkirk, who came passenger in the packet ship the 1st of September, arrived in this city on November 17. While Lord Daer, the noble Earl resided in this city  with his mother, during the absence of his father in the Indian territories, and one of his sisters, the Lady Isabella Helen Douglas, was born at Montreal in 1817.—Montreal Gaz.

Here he is on a Canadian passenger list in November 1835 (first entry, with a servant)

Hi everyone!

My name is Jamie from the U.S. Army and I just wanted to thank all of you for assisting me and Ian on this letter. You guys are pretty amazing. I really appreciate your help. We may need your help again. We have a lot of letters!  ;D

We have deduced that these letters are coming from the wife of George Rumford Baldwin. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Rumford_Baldwin

George was the son of the "Father of American Engineering", Loammi Baldwin
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loammi_Baldwin

I am over the moon that you guys have figured out that they were meeting the 6th Earl of Selkirk. I have never heard of him, so I am learning alot of history here. From the letters we have opened so far, the Baldwins seem to be a very worldly family having friends in Canada and the UK. The other day we opened a letter to Mrs. Baldwin from a famous American banker's wife that lived in London, Joshua Bates.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_Bates_(financier)

I am very excited about these letters, and we are only on the 6th letter!

Regards,
Jamie
