The 1921 Census - WHAT A RIP-OFF
« on: Monday 17 January 22 10:55 GMT (UK) »
I have just been on Find My Past to look at the 1921 census.
Unless you know the exact date of birth and where someone might be living you have no chance.
Even when you find the person you can't verIfy it unless you pay.
WHAT A RIP-OFF
Am I the only person who is dissappointed.

Unfortunately you are NOT the only person who expects everything for nothing.  You DON'T need to know the exact date of birth, nor do you need to know where they might be living.   :-X :-X :-X
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

Absolutely right, in addition to which it has been known for some time that an extra charge would be made for viewing 1921 census entries.

I've found I can obtain a great deal of information without actually buying the record yet. I'll look at them when they're part of a subscription but they aren't totally essential right now, just desirable.
I've only bought about four so far, all the correct families which I decided I didn't want to wait for. I did lots of prep and had a list of names, years of birth searched from the GRO  and if they were likely due to age to still be with their parents, their last known location from the 1911 or military records of ww1 and in some cases their location from electoral rolls especially 1920/1921. Eg I found that great grandma was living with the youngest children at number 41 of one street and her eldest daughter was living with their husband and family at 41a the same street. I think it was like a tenement type house as there were also b, c ,d,e, and f, so not a back to back house. Obviously if I'd had a name like Smith, that would have been harder, but the entries I've searched for and not bought, whilst still having more common surnames, the combination of names meant I could work out which was mine. Perhaps I was just fortunate.

There is also this video which shows the work that has been put into providing this information for us whilst 'restoring'  the documents for the National Archives.

Small thing of interest that I have realized, which I do not think was the case on previous censuses, is that people, more often when visiting, or when they were one of several boarders/guests at a hotel or boarding house, would often fill in their own entries. For me, this means that the 1921 census is one of the only examples I have of several family members' handwriting.

EDIT: this even applies to adult children on several pages I have purchased

....and a very informative article about the amount of work by FindMyPast employees to digitise the census pages.
