Margaret Watterson, born Oct 13, 1872, Ireland, likely went to Philadelphia
« on: Wednesday 19 January 22 22:28 GMT (UK) »
Margaret Watterson was born Oct 13, 1872 in Lisnamorrow, Ireland, parents James Watterson and Margaret Hurl. With a tremendous amount of help, we have located 6 of her siblings deaths in Philadelphia and another sibling, Ignatius, who spent many years there but returned to Ireland many years before his death. The most recent sibling that we researched was Sarah Elena who is almost certainly the same person as Helena.

I would not doubt that Margaret also went to Philadelphia. She is not on the 1901 Irish census with her parents who both died in 1908.
Thanks for any help.

Presume no idea when she immigrated or if there was a marriage in Ireland ?

I did not find a marriage in Ireland and I did not find an emigration but she is not with her parents in 1901 in Ireland. I have looked elsewhere in Ireland in 1901 and didn't find her. This led me to the theory of emigration and to thinking Philadelphia where so many of her siblings went. I even checked for deaths in Ireland 1872-1901.

Is this a different person? The birth year is way off and she is pretty consistent about it on her US records. She died in Quakertown, Bucks Co, PA in 1954.

U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007
Margaret Watterson Phoenix
Birth Date:    13 Jun 1881
Birth Place:    Margrafelt C, United Kingdom
Father:    James Watterson
Mother:    Margret Hurl
SSN:    183077732
Notes:    Dec 1936: Name listed as MARGARET WATTERSON PHOENIX

[the number was issued in Pennsylvania]

-----------
The birth year matches on this lady, but the nationality and destination do not. Just in case it is her:
On the SS Gallia, arriving September 30, 1892, at New York from Liverpool

Kate Proctor, 28, cook,
Margaret J Waterson, 19, spinster,
Anna Waterson, 20, spinster,

All English citizens, all headed to Ohio, all traveling in 2nd cabin, all left from Liverpool.
Kate Proctor says she intends a protracted sojourn in the US
The Watersons say they intend to be transient.

On the other hand, there were Irish citizens on the next page, so these 3 most likely were from England, not just English citizens because they were ruled from England.

And I found this man while searching. I assume you have him, but just in case:
U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007

Name:    Adam Watterson
Gender:    Male
Race:    White
Birth Date:    6 May 1885
Birth Place:    County Dariy, Republic of Ireland [their transcription, not mine]
Father:    James Watterson
Mother:    Margeret Hurl
SSN:    161122742

Despite the date of birth and place of birth, I think you have pulled off a miracle, oldohiohome. Thank you so very much.. As soon as I saw the parents as James Watterson and Margaret Hurl, I thought that is her! Born in Magherafelt as per Social Security Application. Also confirmed by obit saying her sister was Helene Cherry, which I am convinced is the same person as her sister Sarah Elena that we researched very recently. Thank you Sandra.
I don't know where the dob of 1881/1882 came from, and birth in England, but that just wouldn't work with a 1896 marriage when she would only be 14. Watterson is often mixed up as Patterson.
Adam was another brother that we researched a while back. I am so excited and grateful to you both. I did not have high expectations of finding Margaret but I think this is definitely her. Also, a marriage date of 1896 in Philadelphia fits with her not being in Ireland in 1901.
Thanks again

Using the names of children in Margaret Phoenix's obit, I believe that I have found the family in 1920, despite the census saying that the parents are both England, instead of the correct Ireland.
