house and couple NZ late 1800s early 1900s
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 12:22 GMT (UK) »
wondering if this photo can be dated. unfortunately the original is in another city and i am posting what i believe to have been the back of the pic with handwriting. It seems to fit with the descriptions of the plums.
you can tell the back is probably a match because of where the crease is and the missing bottom corners. the picture was hand coloured. some of the handwriting is a bit hard to make out for certain

i think the pic is taken in new zealand

I don't think it is that early, more 1920s and possibly into the early 30s.

I can't help you with the date, but I made a transcription of the handwriting. There's one word I can't read. You can compare it with what you found.

Mrs Green took
this photo, her
hubby is standing
beside me with
a box of plums
in his hand.
This structure is
being transformed
into a neat cottage
of three rooms and
bath room.
The verandah over
the kitchen door is
being ornamented
with trellis work.
A monstrous ...
plum tree overhangs
the verandah.

Thankyou, that seems pretty accurate to me! Thanks again

Carol

I've just enlarged and lightened it to look at and I would agree with your dates, Carol.

Is the gent wearing a winged collar? The woman’s hat is that typical of the 20s for an elderly woman?

I don't think so - it's very 1920s (possibly early - mid 20s)

Add - my connection is misbehaving. I think it looks like a clip/bar under the knot which was fashionable then

I agree with Gadget and it looks like its a normal collar with a collar bar.
