Can someone be recorded on the census twice?
« on: Saturday 22 January 22 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
Is it possible for the same person to be recorded in two different towns on the census?. I had thought my Great Grandma was on the census in Berwick upon tweed in 1921 but I have just seen that she was visiting her sisters family in Hull.
The person I thought was Annie was still working at the same place in Berwick upon tweed as in 1911. I can't find any other Annie's that are the same/similar age, who was born in Berwick upon Tweed on the 1911 census apart from the one I originally found.
Is it possible someone said she was there but she wasn't and she was actually in another town?

Thanks

Simple answer is yes  :)

I have a few instances in my tree- e.g. staying with grandparents and at home, etc. Visiting sister and at home, etc.

Perfectly possible

Although the instructions were to only enter those that were actually in the house on census night, the head of household might have entered all the family who normally live in the house whether or not they were actually present.
Then the person concerned also got recorded where she actually was

I've seen people in two places before on censuses before, but you definitely win this one!  ;D ;D ;D
I love it!

I've been extremely thankful when I've found the same person has been recorded twice because it has given me clues about the rest of the family.   (e.g. a captain of a small craft with brother, wife and child in one port then the same captain, wife and child recorded in their own home together with their other children in another port)

Got 'doubles' in 2 or 3 census returns but this surely wins hands down.  :)

An ancestor of mine is on the 1861 census twice, age two. Once with his parents in Stockport, and also with his grandmother, aunt and cousin in Charlesworth, Derbyshire.
