Hannah Ward & Edward Johnson
« on: Sunday 23 January 22 17:07 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am looking for the marriage records for Hannah Ward & Edward Johnson in 1855..July,August,September. They would have been married in Ryton, Medomsley  or Benfieldside. I can order a marriage certificate but it will take 9 weeks. My whole aim is to find out who Hannah Ward’s mother is and I’m hoping she may be on the marriage certificate as she was an illegitimate child.
Many thanks, Natalie.

She may have named someone as a father on marriage but it will not have her mother's name.  It will be blank or a father's name fictitious or not.  Her mother could have been a witness but no relationships are given so you really don't know.

It is worth looking for as I have seen a mothers name listed in the box where a fathers should be on a marriage certificate when the child was illegitimate

Going by the census records for Hannah Johnson from 1861 onwards her birthdate varies a little but generally c 1825-28 and born Medomsley. There is a baptism (image on Findmypast) of a Hannah Ward bap 18th June 1826 Medomsley the illegitimate daughter of Hannah Ward abode Allendale.

Thank you all. I have been looking for Hannah Ward now for 4years. She becomes a Johnson after having her first 2 children in lanchester workhouse. I am almost sure she is the illegitimate Daughter of Isabel Ward born in 1806 in the paper mill, Blackall Mill. She was born in  Medomsley in 1826 yet the only birt of Hannah Ward in Medomsley was to a Hannah Ward as you mention. Could Isabel have put the name Hannah down as her own name as the child was illegitimate ? Isabel goes on to be in Hannah’s life and takes on Ann (one of Hannah’s workhouse children) by the 1861 census.

I think the Hannah born in Allendale is my Hannah but Isabel has given a false name . Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

This is a good contender for Hannah pre marriage. The 2 daughters Ann and Elizabeth born Lanchester have baptism records that both record no father, mother Hannah.

When she leaves the workhouse she marries Edward Johnson.
