The Crowley family of the Brothers' Pride
« on: Monday 24 January 22 00:53 GMT (UK) »
Hello there,
Just some background. I am currently researching the Brothers' Pride that arrived in New Zealand on December 9th, 1863. More specifically I am trying to discover which of the passengers died during the quarantine period the passengers were subject to; from December 10th to December 24th, 1863. According to sources I have read, there were 4 people who passed away at the Camp Bay quarantine facility at Lyttelton Harbour near Lyttelton. I know of 2 of the 4. One is the 2 month old son of Milborough and David Hathaway. The other is 7 month old Walter MacKay, the son of Robert and Elizabeth MacKay.
The way I am doing this is by eliminating passengers who died at sea and those who died after 1863. So far I am about 70% through the passenger list. First focusing on the most likely (families with infants and children) before I will moving onto other passengers. Since quarantine ended on Dec 24th, any passengers who died in 1863 died during quarantine.

The Crowley family were one who were at Camp Bay. I have made many attempts at researching and keep coming up blank. Any help is kindly received. The Crowley family were:

Cornelius Crowley (father) born approx. 1831 - he was a carpenter
Catherine Crowley (mother) born approx. 1830
George Crowley (son) born approx. 1853
Cornelius Crowley (son) born approx. 1855
Margaret Crowley (daughter) born approx. 1858
Catherine Crowley (daughter) born approx. 1859
Josiah Crowley (son) born approx. 1861
Mary Crowley (daughter) born approx. 1862

Before boarding the Brothers' Pride they recorded as living in Middlesex UK.

Many thanks,

Ashley

Hi Ashley

A bit puzzled about why you're asking about this CROWLEY family and why your "researching" has come up blank ???

*   What resources are you using to "find" passengers (immigrants) generally ??

*   Do you have access to any pay-to-view resources (e.g.  ancestry / FindMyPast etc )   ??

*   Are you checking the likes of PapersPast, NZ BDM online, for information, before asking here  ??

This NZ death  >
1900/4337 - CROWLEY -Cornelius - 44 years     [ bc 1856 ]
is very possibly the CROWLEY child you have " born approx  1855"   ?

Hi Lu,
Unfortunately I do not have personal access to paid resources. I have been going to the local library once a week. Using paperspast, the Library edition of ancestry and FamilySearch.

I do use BDM - hard to know if the same person sometimes.
One of the Crowley family could have died on Camp Bay.

This family would appear to be Irish. Children are mostly born in Dublin so family may have gone straight from Dublin to London to get on the ship.

If you want them, have a look here for baptisms. Images for the baptisms are on Ancestry as well.

https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en/

There is a tree on Ancestry that has the Josiah as Joseph whose death was in Chch in 1864.

Cornelius who died in 1900 that Lu found is buried in Waipawa.

And I think the resources provided on your other topic might also be helpful for this enquiry.

I would add to the list Lyttelton (and/or Christchurch) City Council Archives, Christchurch City
Museum and the Christchurch branch of Archives New Zealand.

There's a book on this subject which might be exactly what you need:

In Sickness and in Health: Brother's Pride and Bahia.: Two Ships. Two Fates. One Arrival Date. Lyttelton Heads, 1863.
