Barnes/Leam Crichton 1765
« on: Wednesday 26 January 22 20:13 GMT (UK) »
I’m looking at my 5xG Grandparents, John Barnes and Elizabeth Leam, who married on 2 Jan 1765 in Crich.

The problem is that I can’t find a baptism record for Elizabeth. And I’m wondering if she had been widowed before marrying John Barnes. There’s nothing in the marriage record to indicate that..

There is though,an Elizabeth Thorp, who marries Samuel Leam in 1755. There’s also a burial for a Samuel Leam in 1760 (though nothing to indicate this is the same Samuel)

Has anyone got anything that might help to clarify who Elizabeth really was?

Many thanks

The entry for the marriage on the FreeReg site states that John is a bachelor and Elizabeth is a spinster.

To be absolutely certain you need to see an image of the original entry in the Parish Register. Never rely on transcriptions as mistakes are often made.

Thank you.

The register entry shows dates for the reading of Banns and of the marriage. It indicates both were of ‘this parish’, but does not mention their previous ‘condition’.

I wonder where FreeReg got the info from then. They usually copy the whole entry and don't add bits.

Thank you. I had found that marriage, but not the licence.

I’m still not sure whether it is the Elizabeth I’m looking for. But certainly a possibility

There’s a Samuel Leam buried at Fritchley 30 Jul 1760, which could fit with Elizabeth then remarrying in 1765 to John Barnes
