Photo of Garner woman with DoB. Who is she?
« on: Thursday 27 January 22 12:28 GMT (UK) »
My Grandfather was married twice. He had 2/3 children with his first wife who I believe died in 1919 (possibly Spanish Flu, who knows). His name was Henry Garner. I believe that the attached photo is their youngest daughter who may have been born in 1914, making her 5 when her Mother died. I think she had this "birthday card" made up to mark her 30th birthday & to be placed as a memorial on her mother's grave (I think her Dad kept it & it was passed on). If that's correct then her DoB would be 10th Jan 1914 (according to the message on the card) & her surname/maiden name would be Garner. I cannot locate her. I'd like to know her first names & her mother's maiden name. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Welcome to rootschat.

What was the name of Henry Garners second wife, where and when did they marry

ADDED
If the photo was of a daughter of Henry to his first wife who died c1919 presumably she was living with Henry and his 2nd wife in 1921 as she is referring to 'Mum & Dad' in 1944.
Thinking about it, I have doubts that she was Henrys daughter with his first wife as why would she be sending a photo to her stepmother and father on her birthday.

They lived in South East England. Somewhere in the vicinity of Tonbridge possibly.

Thanks for your response. The handwriting on the card says -

"Jan 10th 1944
To Mum
on my 30th
Birthday."

The words "Mum and Dad" do not appear on the card. In 1944 when the text was written her father, Henry Garner, was still alive. Her Mum died in 1918 apparently (not 1919), so she would have been dead for 26 years when the card was written. I believe the card was intended to be placed on her Mother's grave as a kind of memorial. I believe she asked her father to do this & he later kept the card because it was a nice thought, and a good picture of his daughter. I notice that you mentioned the date 1921, but I'm not clear where this came from, it's not in my post.

Hi from me too  :)

There is a family tree on Ancestry which has these details for the daughter born on 10 Jan 1914:

GARNER, DORIS  KATHLEEN      SULLIVAN
GRO Reference: 1914  M Quarter in CROYDON  Volume 02A  Page 726

Death is given as 17 Jan 2009 in Bury St Edmunds

Mother was Catherine/Kathleen Sullivan (marriage Sept 1910 Beddington, Surrey).

From reg: Marriages 3rd Qrt  1910
Henry Garner and Kate Sullivan     Croydon    2a   529

Should therefore show on the 1911 census.

Likely death for mother:

3rd Qrt 1918 - Kathleen Garner 26   Croydon    2a   419

1911 census entry in Mitcham www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW85-7W9

I think this is son's birth reg:

3rd Qrt 1910 - William H GARNER  Croydon    2a   365

There is a christening entry for baby on 18 Dec 1910 St Michael and All Angels, South Beddington. Doris Kathleen was also baptised there on 15 March 1914.

I can only see 2 children for them so far.

Does this match with what you know about your grandfather Henry?

@MonicaL Fantastic! Yes, that is all a good match for what I know. This is my half-Aunty. Interesting that the Ancestry family tree has "Death is given as 17 Jan 2009 in Bury St Edmunds". The family lore is that Doris Kathleen emigrated to Canada at some point but, of course, there is no reason why she couldn't have returned to the UK when she was older. Thanks very much for your help.
