I wonder if the Claude Mills who is in Kendal on 1911 census is worth further investigation.

He is boarding with Hannah Storey. Born abt.1869 Waltham Cross, single, sewing machine agent.

Obviously not all the details fit but he may have changed them to avoid detection and sewing machine agent is in a similar field as drapery.  Kendal is not a million miles away from Blackpool either. Also I can not find any other reference to this Claude Mills that would fit, he just suddenly appears in 1911.

May be him that leaves for USA with wife Jeanette in 1924.

Could all be a total red herring of course but stranger things have happened 😜

Hi Pinetree

That looks interesting. Difficult to follow up, but I will investigate further. I'm really looking for any DNA matches, that may point me in the right direction.

This looks like Claude and Jeanette from the passenger list in 1940 US census

Rosie, would you believe there are two sets roaming about!

This one you have just posted on, was born in 1877 in England. He left for the US in 1902 and naturalized in 1903. He is then back and forth to the UK. He shows in some docs as a box cutter. There is a family tree for him that connects him back to family in England. He looks to have married his wife late 1920s.

The other one you found Pinetree returning to the US with wife Jeanette in 1924 fits better except that I think he was an American national along with his wife Jeanette.

However, I thought the 1911 census entry you found Pinetree looked full of promise  ;D but can't see anymore for him like you so far.

I would believe anything  ;D
The one I have been following was born in Stratford upon Avon - his father was Henry Joseph Mills according to his passport application

Thank you for your suggestions, but I think none of the Christopher Mills's are the right one.

At Census, 1911, Alice, married, and six children are living at 1 Norreys Avenue, Hinksey, Oxfordshire.

I do not see any others recorded at 1 Norreys Avenue, Hinksey, Oxfordshire.

This is a house of eight rooms. Percy and brother Harold are apprentices and no occupation for mother Alice.

You might wonder how a deserted Alice could afford a large house?

Have you previously looked at Claud/e and found him elsewhere.

I have just searched the 1901, 1891 and 1881 for a 'male' Mills born c1867  'Waltham Cross' and the only entry coming up is Christopher.  Doing the same for 1911 the only one is Claud  :-\
