Was my ancestor an Actress
« on: Friday 28 January 22 11:02 GMT (UK) »
My Mum has uncovered an unknown Aunt and Uncle of hers.  Sadly the Aunt, Grace Violet Allen, died at the age of 24.  I have a Birth Certificate, Death certificate and details of the Coroner's report which was in the Stratford Express for Grace.  The only information My Mum was given about her Aunt is that she was an actress who looked like my Mum.   There is no information to suggest this, as on the 1921 census she was a Cook.  The only information I have that possibly links her to the Acting industry is that on 10th July 1913 she entered Mile End Workhouse with Dolly Bartholomew and Dolly's son Frederick Bartholomew.  I purchased Frederick's birth certificate (he was born in the Workhouse) and Dolly's occupation is stated as being a Costume Maker.  This seems to mean she could have been linked to the Acting industry too.   Normally if you were a seamstress it would be listed as Dressmaker.  Grace's 3 siblings all entered the Workhouse in 1907 and went to Scattered homes but she went to live with her Uncle (Mum's brother) and Aunt and then seems to have ended up with Dolly.  I'm not sure where to look for information to see if she was in fact a child actress.  Thank you.

Hi
Why do you think Grace is connected to Dolly Bartholomew?
Dolly and her son Frederick were returning to the Mile End workhouse from the infirmary on 10 July 1913.

Grace V Allen was admitted to the workhouse on the same day from 1 Clinton Road.

Thanks for your message.  When they all enter the workhouse  - under Fred, and next to Grace there are 'ditto' marks implying 'Child of Dolly' or that is what I read it as.  Maybe it was just a mistake!  But I thought it was a coincidence, particularly as the one of only two things my Mum was told about Grace is that she was an actress.

Grace was discharged the next day, 11 July 1913, to Scattered Homes.

You can always look for her being mentioned in connection with the professional or amateur theatre in the newspapers.

Thanks.  I have found one but it is difficult to know whether it is her or not as she came from East London and this is in St Albans!

This is not in St Albans - it is in St Albans Hall, Golders Green.
