2nd great grandfather
« on: Sunday 30 January 22 00:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi, one of my ancestors just pops up almost out of nowhere.  After a great deal of frustration got a hold of his death certificate.  He was born in Hamburg (to English parents).  Luckily the death certificate showed that his father was a Stonemason.  Now I'm probably clutching at straws here as I cannot find his father's name in records but Sir George Gilbert Scott was behind the building of St Nicholas Church in Hamburg, so am wondering if this was the reason he was in Hamburg at the time of his son's birth.  Any ideas as to where I can track down the father as no idea where he came from in England/UK.
Thanks,
Gata

Hi there, and welcome to Rootschat.

It's possible, but I don't think it will get you any closer to finding his father.

I presume you have his father's info from his marriage certificate, not death? (Unless he wasn't in England). Have you checked the address and witness details from his marriage?

Have you looked for a birth for him in the GRO overseas records?

Hello ,

Sir George Gilbert Scott's family (children) is out lined on this Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Gilbert_Scott#Family

If you would share names, event details, dates etc, of what you've mentioned above,  perhaps we might be able help further.... :)

Cheers,
AMBLY

Hi, not sure if my original post was well written.  Unfortunately not related to Sir George Gilbert Scott's family - but just wondered if my ancestor John Dolton had worked on the church in Hamburg.
I cannot find his records (yet :( ) but his son was definitely born in Hamburg according to his death certificate and also his naturalisation papers.
Apparently there is an English (Anglican) Church in Hamburg and I am assuming the family would have attended there.  Should I contact the church directly or where else would I possibly be able to find birth / christening records from Hamburg in the 1840s?
Thanks so much for everyone's kind assistance!

Welcome to rootschat

What information do you have for John Dolton and his wife.  When was their son born and what was his name.

If he was naturalised would mean he was not British by birth.
A child born overseas to British parents was deemed to be a British subject.

Yes, I think we need to know more about his child first. It is often the case that people describe themselves as from, e.g. "Paris" or "Hamburg" but their actual records

So, take a step back and focus on the timeline of his son's life.
Where and when, exactly, did he marry? What information is given on that record - all of it, including addresses, witnesses, which denomination of church, etc, is evidence.
Which censuses does he appear on?
Where and where was this naturalisation record you mention?
Is his information in each of these references - name spelling, place of birth, age, etc - consistent or does it vary?

Well I am a little confused - the way I read it a Dolton - no Christian name given - was born in Hamburg early 1840's ?  I have found
Frederick Augustus Dolton born 28th October 1845 in Hamburg
father John Dolton
mother Mary Allen
this man married in Sydney ,Australia and died in Sydney Hospital on 9th May 1911
...........................................
this is the only Hamburg based Dolton birth I can find - if it is the man you are looking for ??

Married 22 December 1873, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, to Margaret Gilson 1852-1926 with
M William Augustus G. Dolton 1875-1875
F Emily Ellen Jane Dolton 1876-1960
M John Frederick George Dolton 1879-1884
M Richard Charles Frederick Dolton 1881-1951
F Victoria Amelia Mary Dolton 1884-1975
M Bruce Stanley Dolton 1886-1960
F Wilhelmine Isabel 'Minnie' Dolton 1889-1972
