On a general note can someone talk to me about marriage results on FindMyPast where one person is recorded as having" married one of these people " followed by a list of names .

Does it arise because multiple parish marriages have happened in that year and quarter, have a spouse in common and those parish records have been sent off to a central point ?

What is the best way of identifying who married who ? Would it be by looking at parish marriages ?

I'm sure this has been asked and answered before but a quick search on here hasn't thrown up any relevant posts .
Any advice gratefully received .

The people named are those of the other sex which the index says are mentioned on the same page of the statutory register.

If you look at this image, taken from FreeBMD, you will see what GR2 means.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

And just to add, if you want to find out which couple married, the best way is to buy the marriage certificate, however if you don't want to spend the $$ you could try looking in future censuses to see if they appear, and on the GRO you can look at births with mother's maiden name to see if you have the right couple.

Hope that makes sense.

That's if you can't find a parish record.  :)

One way to see whom they married is to look for one of the names in the first available census after the marriage date and see whom the spouse is - doesn't always work if there a a couple of same names of course.

Bond - Berkshire & London
Bishop - Sussex & Kent
Holland - Essex
Nevitt - Cheshire & Staffordshire

The best way of honing in further is to check the MMN of children born to your family of interest.

eg Miss Wellington wed Mr Boot, Mr Shoe or Miss Slipper.

Do the birth indexes show "Boot" children with MMN Wellington, or Slipper?
Do the birth Indexes show "Shoe" children with MMN Wellington or Slipper?

What I do is look for the combination of names in the following census, so in BumbleB's example, I would look to see if Prior was in the census with an Ester or a Maria.

If you know the name of any children they had, you can get their mother's maiden name by looking up there birth on the GRO.
