Why is my grandmother blanked out in 1939 register?
« on: Tuesday 01 February 22 16:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Just returning to ancestry after a very long break! I'm currently revisiting my dad's side of the tree and and am still unable to locate my grandmother in the 1939 register. I have found my grandfather (Ernest William Jennings b1923) living with his father and siblings and I have found my grandmother's mother, sister and brother but not my grandmother. There is a blanked out line on the record with my Grandmother's family so I'm wondering if this could perhaps be my Grandmother but she died in 2004 so I don't know why it would still not be accessible? My grandparents were married in 1939 but seeing as my grandfather was still living with his family I'm assuming their marriage took place after the 1939 register was completed.
My Grandmother's name was Nellie Collingbourne and she was born in Stepney in 1920. She would still have been in the Stepney area in 1939. Her mother was a Rose Collingbourne b1879.
Might her record still be blocked and if so can I request to have it unblocked as my grandmother is long deceased?
thank you!
ps if it helps the address where I think she should be is 9 York Place in Stepney.

She could have been elsewhere,  and the blacked out line isnt her.

10. How can I open a record of an individual I know to be deceased?

To open a record it must first be located and checked. If you are a Findmypast.co.uk subscriber and you have located a closed record, you can request a check of the record free of charge and if successful, the record will be made available via the online service. Please note, Findmypast will not search for records on your behalf – to request a check of a closed record you must locate the record yourself first. To have a record checked you will be required to provide proof of death, most commonly a death certificate. If you have proof of death but cannot identify a specific record, you can request a search of the 1939 Register for a fee using The National Archives Freedom of Information (FOI) request form.

Yes I did read that this was the case, but assumed as my nan passed in 2004 it would have been opened by now.. I didn't realise that someone had to actually notify them. Well I have dug out my nan's death cert and have made the request. Hopefully it won't take too long! I am currently putting together all my findings and turning it into a book for my dad! So will be nice if I can get access to this record!

I think that the given names may have to match when they are comparing batches of deaths against the 1939 records so that blanked out entries are opened up to view.

Case in point my mother was the oldest of five girls, she and two others are dead. In 1939 all five girls should have been at home with their parents.

If I look at the 1939 entry their Mum and Dad are open as are my Mum and one of her dead sisters. The two who are still alive I assume are two of the three blanked out entries.

I think the reason that the third blanked out entry isn't the other dead sister - and she doesn't show up anywhere else by searching - is that her birth was registered as Florence Brenda but her death was registered as Brenda Florence - ie an automated matching algorithm won't match the two names.

Might your Nellie's birth and death have been registered differently and that's why she hasn't automatically been opened?

Well she was registered as a Nellie Collingbourne at birth and died as a Nellie Jennings as she married. I thought the 1939 register was updated with married surnames though. On her sister's entry the surname Collingbourne is crossed out and replaced with her married name Orchent. I have now sent a copy of my nan's death cert to FindMyPast and requested that the record be opened! Hope it's soon!
