Parents name Canada wedding James Spence Jennie Shaw Middlesex ON 11 Jul 1883

Looking for information beyond a found marriage document for James Spence Jennie Shaw Middlesex ON 11 Jul 1883.

James is sometimes noted as James Argyle Spence and James Alexander Spence.

Parents are noted as Daniel and Rebecca but some suggest that is an error in transcription and father is David.  Mother seems to be Rebecca in image.

What thoughts on the names in attacjed?

The marriage document  says James was born in London, Middlesex Ontario so family should  appear in 1861 and 1871 Census.  There are some possible matches but parents names do not match Daniel and Rebecca.  David and Barbara appear several times.

James' death info is no help.  Also cannot find possible deaths for either parent

Me too. Though I can see how the mistake was made.

If I hadn't known beforehand, I would have said it could be Daniel but is definitely David.

The 1861 and 1871 census have a family with David Spence (born 1825 Scotland)  as father and what looks like Barbara as his spouse, born 1830 Scotland.  They have a son James born 1856 in Ontario according to 1871 document.  That fits the James A Spence I am looking for.

Barbara and Rebecca seem hard to confuse.

There is a possible grave marker in London.    Perhaps some more digging will figure out the Barbara Rebecca mystery.  The linked marker references a half sibling but the relationships shown seem confused.  More digging tomorrow.  Sadly the cemetery mentioned has poor records as it was abandoned for a number of years and amalgamated with another next to it.  Maybe they will have these

You can find marriage records for other children of the couple David Spence & Barbara. The death for their daughter Margaret indicates Barbara's name is Barclay, as does the death for Frances and a later marriage for their son David.

Given those four marriages happened in London or Westminster, same as the one you posted, I would be inclined to say Rebecca was likely just a mistake for Barbara.

In the 1861 census the family is living next to other Barclays, presumably Barbara's family.

So unless there was something extra-marital, you now have children born on either side of James that have their mother listed as Barbara Barclay and only the one instance of Rebecca.
