Looking for death of Gweneth Jones - Abergele
« on: Wednesday 02 February 22 15:02 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the death of Gweneth Jones, last known address in August 1972 was 249 Maes Canol Abergele. She was born 3/9/1907 Ardath, Bryn Road, Lampeter as Gwynedd Margaret Myfanwy Roberts.
On the 1921 Census her name appears as Gweneth Roberts, Orphan living with Ellis & ME Hughes (farmer & his wife) Abergele
On Gweneth's husband Maurice Jones Obituary dated 31/8/1972 it states they had lived at Ffynnon Wen, Moelfre,  Abergele from 1944 to 1966. Maurice had been one of the founders of Abergele Young Farmers Club. They had married 24/2/1944.
I would be very grateful for any help in finding what happened to Gweneth after 1972.

Any possibility she remarried.  She was 65 when Maurice died.  Does his obit confirm she was definitely still alive in 1972

In your opening post her date of birth was 3.9.1907. In 1939 when living in the household of Maurice Jones her DOB is 11.9.1907. Bearing in mind her full birth name the below is a possible contender for her death.

Margaret Gwendoline Jones
DOB 19 Sep 1907   Feb 1999       Denbighshire North   Clwyd

or

Gwendraeth Margaret Jones

DOB 16 Sep 1907   Oct 1987       Carmarthen   Dyfed

Thanks Carole.  That's an interesting thought.  The obit does confirm Gweneth's survival.  I will definitely explore that possibility.  Also thanks John.  From what I know it sadly seems very unlikely that Gweneth even knew what her registered name was though I will take note of those deaths just in case they do crop up again.  John

This may (or may not) help but in 1939 Maurice was with his brother Trevor (born 1 February 1898) - who was then a single man.

In the 1972 obit that you have referenced, Trevor was mentioned as living at Bodelwyddan and there is, in the probate indexes, a Trevor Jones of White Lodge, Bodelwyddan who died on 15 June 1984.

Thinking obliquely, as he was single in 1939 & might never have married, could it be worth spending £1.50 to obtain a copy of the probate details (and perhaps the Will) that might possibly mention Gweneth?

A bit of a wild shot but probably worth it - given the minimal cost involved.

D1/4 1907  Gwenydd Margaret M Roberts b. Lampeter 11b 25

Gwenydd is a very unusual name - wonder if her name was Gwyn(n)eth and this was transcribed as Gwenydd.

However she seems to have used the name Gweneth - another unusual name.

Yes it is unusual but it was definitely the spelling on her birth registration.  I’m informed that the “dd” is pronounced as “th” so I guess Gweneth is a straight English translation.
