Immigration into New York from Jersey in 1849 - Thomas, Caroline, James (2) and  Thomas (3, so possibly Charles Thomas?)

There is a passenger list at Ellis Island dated 1849 with Thomas, Caroline, James (aged 2) and Thomas (aged 3 months) on the Typhis from Jersey. Thomas's occupation is given as a mariner.

Thank you ALL SOOO much for these answers!!  I am very much appreciative!  I will research these leads further and see what I find.  I do think the immigration in 1849 looks accurate, although.  Very excited to explore further!

Also, my father and grandfather were both Phillip Thomas Hamon and my great grandfather James Hamon was a sea captain in San Francisco, so having a mariner father makes sense! :) :)

A tree on Ancestry shows his birthplace as follows - Jersey,  Islands Common, Huntingdonshire, England ??? ???

It has him as James Alphus Hamon & his parents as Thomas & Caroline

Do you have him on a US census confirming his birthplace?

Right - Huntingdonshire is not correct as that's not on Jersey (!) but rather in England.  I don't have census information for my great grandfather, but my grandfather says his father came from Ireland on one census and France on another, so who knows!  Family "stories" are that James Snr. came from Jersey.

Working in the other direction, a Thomas Hamon and Caroline Cooper married in St Helier in 1838.  He was a sailor. I can find  her with family in 1841 and two children baptised: Thomas Alfred (1843) and Charles Thomas (1848).

Not found any of them after that until the baptism in 1867 of Thomas Henry b 1865 (parents Thomas H and Caroline Cooper) added: baptism in St Helier

Ooh - and on that baptism he's born in the states of New Jersey, USA, Franklin Township, Bergen county

Thomas snr is by now a master mariner

THIS is very interesting!  Exploring further.  My GGF was a mariner in San Francisco also.

Welcome from me too

The 1861 census shows a James Hamon b Jersey in lodgings in Middlesex but his birthyear is 1831

When did he emigrate?  Who did he marry & did he marry in the US?

He married a Delia Carr in San Francisco and he emigrated in 1849.

Think I've found Thomas snr's certificate from 1854 which lists his service record. Born 2 December 1815. Went to sea as an apprentice in 1826.

In the vital period of the 1840s he's on ships plying their trade out of Newfoundland, central and south America

He gives an address at 19 Mercer Court, Red Cross Street, but where that is I'm not sure. He's asked for his certificate to be sent to Liverpool

This sounds possible.  But I think my GGF came to America in 1849 with his Mom and Dad, Thomas Hamon and Caroline Cooper.  At least, this makes the most sense at the moment as I can't find any other records of a James Hamon immigrating in those years.
