Information on Bridget Rooney born in County Galway abt. 1834
« on: Sunday 06 February 22 09:24 GMT (UK) »
Hello!  I am new to RootsChat!  My great great grandmother, Bridget Rooney (married name Carr) supposedly was born in County Galway in 1834.  She died in California in 1911.  She was married to Thomas Carr, but I'm not sure when they married.  Any information very much appreciated!  Thank you!
Hamon: Jersey Island; Carr: Galway, Ireland; Rooney: Galway, Ireland; Gallick: Mexico; Knoblauch: Poland; Gumpert: Poland

Do you know when their eldest child was born? Civil registration of Catholic marriages didn't start until 1864 (non-Catholic ones, including Registry Office ones, from 1845) so if they married in a Catholic church before 1864 you need to search for parish registers.

I do not know if they were married in Ireland.  It seems that all 3 of their children were born in the U.S., but also can't find confirmed records.  But that is what it says on their death certificates.

Have you checked 1900 & 1910 U.S. census to see when Bridget was supposed to have arrived in America? When & where did her husband Thomas die?

So, after looking at American census records and death records - it seems they are likely to have married in Ireland as Thomas and Bridget are together in San Francisco, certainly by 1860 - in addition their probable first child, aged 1 month, born in America, is with them.

On a balance of probability they married and travelled out together.

I see also, from Thomas's death record in 1871 in San Francisco - he was born in County Galway.

So we are looking for a marriage in Galway (supposition of course!) in the mid to late 1850s.

Haven't spotted one yet - but will resume a hunt later.
Places of interest;
Lancashire, West Yorkshire, Southern Ireland, Scotland.

Marriage could be in New York - Michael Robert Carr was born in New York 2 June 1859 ?
Census records seem to suggest that.

Thank you, Sandra -- I can't find a marriage in Ireland. Nor have I found a baptism for Bridget.
(That means someone else will find something now!)
