Cemetery disappeared…
« on: Tuesday 08 February 22 14:24 GMT (UK) »
Good afternoon Everyone…

I have an 1862 death and I can’t even find the cemetery, let alone the headstone.  And using Google Maps and ‘Find a Grave’ there’s no trace.
I suppose it’s only normal as this was central London. (St. George Hanover Square)

As this man was a Waterloo hero and one of the most decorated soldiers in the British Army, is it possible that his headstone could have been safeguarded somewhere ?

Thanks…, Iain.

Findagrave.com has 1723 memorials in St George Churchyard in Hanover Square. However, there are no Fraser memorials listed.

Thank you Annie...

All very confusing.
In addition, I find it very difficult to imagine the bulldozer at work preparing the foundations.  The driver must have had a blindfold.

Wikipedia gives further information; the burial ground was actually separate from the church, firstly at Mount St next the workhouse, then (from 1765) at Bayswater. The latter was, according to wiki, closed in 1854 and it doesn’t say what then happened after this date with burials from this church. When the Bayswater site was cleared for development in 1969, 11500 remains were taken from there and cremated at West Norwood.

I wonder if your man had a church service at St George but was actually buried in a municipal plot?

Second attempt at posting about this because the first one disappeared.  Newspaper reports in March 1862 say Sergeant Major Ralph Fraser was buried in the Brompton Cemetery.

Yes..., quite interesting.  I'll check it out.
I have difficulty in understanding why his death registration has St. George, while he was burried in Brompton.
I'll have another go with Find a Grave.    ;)
