Wyatt, Devon, England
« on: Wednesday 09 February 22 02:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello and thank you for letting me join.

I am researching my Paternal Great Grandmother's line.

Her name was Lilian Grace Wyatt Dehnel. Her father was John Tozer Wyatt born 1841 Ivybridge Devon. Her mother was Mary Ann Lose Metherell from Cornwall.

I do have information gleaned from the other websites and I also have near on all the children's birth certificates, except one and his name is Thomas Wyatt born 1881.

There is no Thomas born in Plymouth in 1881, according to the GRO records but there is one born 1880 and is son to John Tozer, but unfortunately this Thomas  died 36 hours after his birth.

While researching this family, I have found that Mary Ann by 1873 sometimes went by the name Elizabeth, on birth certificates as well as on some censuses. Mary Ann died in 1910.

But back to Thomas (1881). He is on the 1891 census, the 1901census (as Tam), 1911 census he is married. The marriage record that I have found has John Tozer Wyatt as his father.
The 1921 census has Thomas' birth place as Torquay but again no joy with the grow records.
If anyone has any advice to where I go to find Thomas' birth record, I would be grateful :)
Thank you for reading.

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Interesting to note that the Thomas on the 1891 census is down as Thomas L.  It seems on the face of it, that for whatever reason, his birth was not registered.

I can't see any baptisms, so far, for any of John and Mary's children which might have been a way to check for this Thomas.

Do you have an exact date for his birth or death?

Just trying to see where the other Thomas would fit in as the dates seem quite tight for another child to squeeze in between Dec 1880 to Jul 1882.  Appreciate Dec 1880 was just the registration quarter.

Birth for Lilian Grace was 14 Jul 1882.  Her baptism was 8 Feb 1883 Plymouth St Peter with parents down as John Tozer Wyatt & Elizabeth Wyatt.

Yes, Thomas' birth was 6th November 1880 and death 8th November 1880.
My supposition is that Thomas (1881) may have been a son from one of the elder girls and was adopted-brought up by his grandparents under the guise of parents.

As to baptisms, they seemed to like to baptize the children later. the Eldest girl Mary Ann (1860) was baptized (1875) when she was 15 years old with her brother John (who was a baby), and their second daughter Elizabeth was similar.

By my reckoning John Tozer and Mary Ann had 11 children (+ Thomas (1881) and are as follows;
Mary Ann born 2 days after her parents marriage 1860, baptized 1875
John  born May 1862, baptized June 1862,  died June 1862.
John born Nov 1863, died Dec 1863. no baptism found (yet).
Elizabeth born 1865, baptized 1882.
Catherine Grace born 1868, died 1871, a baptism recorded in her name in 1878.
Blanche born 1871, baptized 1878 (with Catherine)
John born Oct 1873, died Oct 1873
John Tozer Lose born 1875, baptized with sister Mary Ann 1875.
Lilian Grace born 1878, died 1880 (Now I believe it is  Lilian not Catherine that was baptized with Blanche)
Thomas born 6th Nov 1880 died 8th Nov 1880
Thomas (1881) ???????????
Lilian Grace born 1882, baptized 1883.
All this information I have are from birth and death certificates  (GRO) as well as baptismal records from Devon (on FindMyPast)
Around the time of  John #3 is when I start seeing Mary Ann coming up as Elizabeth. I am wondering if maybe Mary Ann was suffering some sort of mental issue (or just wanted a change), but I firmly believe through my research that John was married only to Mary Ann.
