I haven’t read the previous thread so this might be there already

1850 census New York
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MCYD-H9R

Transcription Caroline Cooper. Is it an error?

It looks like an error/confusion by the numerator or transcriber. Caroline's surname was written Cooper. Her sister Cecilia's surname (over the page) was written Hammon. They should have been the other way round.
What happened to Alford or Alfred, aged 7?

I am confused (not unusual) between the two threads.
Where was James between 1850 and his marriage in 1883 (I think from memory)?

1841 1462 /67/1
St Saviour, Jersey

Caroline Hamon   20 yrs born England
Susan Cooper   21 yrs born England
William Cooper   13 yrs born Jersey
Cecelia Cooper   13 yrs born Jersey

Note that the elder 2 siblings, Susan and Caroline, had birthplace "England" and younger 2, William and Cecilia had birthplace Jersey.
The question about birthplace on 1841 census had basic options: born in county; not born in county; born in Ireland or Scotland; born outside UK.

Do we know for certain that James is of this family?
