The GREGORY Family of Youlgreave, Derbyshire, UK
« on: Sunday 13 February 22 05:43 GMT (UK) »
I'm hoping someone can give me an idea of the age of this photograph please? I think it is a four generation photograph of Wm, Wm, Wm and Wm Colin Gregory but others say the man sitting down is not a relation, why would he be in the photo if he wasn't?

Anyway I think the child is Wm Colin born 1896, others think he is the one standing behind him in the uniform. I'd also love to know if anyone can identify the uniform but it is not very clear.

If it is a four generation photo then it would have been taken before 1903, so a general idea of the date of the photo would be appreciated thank you.

First of all can you tell us what it is we're looking at.
Is it a postcard type photo or cabinet card?
where was it taken?

No sorry I don't know any of that, this is just how it was sent to me. I've asked for a scan of the back but it maybe awhile before I get it.

I was hoping someone could tell how old it was by the clothes, it doesn't have to be exact, just thereabouts.

Jim's better at dating men's clothing than I am but, going by the man, back right, I'd say early 1900s. I have  a pic circa 1900 with that type of clothing in one of my books.

It does depend on quite a few things though - e.g.  how fashionable they were, age, social class and which country.

If they were living in Youlgreave at that time I wonder if the man in uniform is a member of a band?

There was and still is a Silver Band in the village.

If it's a band it would have to be military as he has
crossed sabres on his sleeve = PT Instructor.
His uniform looks a bit care worn & I'm thinking
he might be Militia rather than a full timer.
As an aside this was taken in a photo booth as the light
is from above & they are very close to the backdrop.

Thank you everyone for your replies, they all give me something to think on.

I maybe wrong about William Colin being the child in the photo, I do know he was a private during WWI in the 16th and 9th Battalions of the Notts & Derby Regiment. He would have been 18 if he's the child but if he's the one in the uniform then the photo would have been taken sometime from 1914 to 1920. In that case the child is not his because he was still single in the 1939 register!

Surely you wouldn't be going to all the trouble of dressing up & travelling to a studio/photo booth for a four generation photo when the child wasn't yours and the older man is not family, it doesn't make sense.

So far I haven't been able to find out if Wm Colin's father William Gregory was in the military around 1897, this isn't my family so I need to wait on more information. I'll be back when I have something.

Thank you all again, it is much appreciated.
Cheers....Dawn
