Deciphering place names in a UK 1851 Census
« on: Monday 14 February 22 05:04 GMT (UK) »
Hi, This is my first post so I hope it's in the right place and format :).  This is for my 4 x Grt. Grandparents who were living in Datchet, Berkshire when the 1851 Census was taken.  My problem is I can not make out the place names of where they were born.  Benjamin Simmons is the Head of the household and it's pretty clear that he was born in Bath, Somersetshire.  However, his wife, Mary's  place of birth has completely baffled me.  The 3rd person is Sarah Morris, listed as 'Mother' and I presume that means mother of the Head, Benjamin - am I correct in that assumption?  Also, her place of birth is 'Oken, Surrey' but I could only find an 'Ockham, Surrey' - would that be more likely?  I attach a picture of the handwritten place names.   I hope you can help me out with this and thanks in advance.

Hi Lemon  ;D
and welcome to RC!

If I have understood this correctly, the first line (College) is unimportant? We should be looking at lines 2, 3 and 4?

As you say, Somersetshire Bath is easy to discern. (Don't know why the county came first here.)
Then it should probably be Lyminster Hampshire.
And as you say, Ockham is probably the best bet for Oken, which does not seem to exist.

Best regards,
Karen

Hi
Yes usually the mother is the mother of the Head of the household.
But in this case maybe not
Benjamin Sims married Mary Morris 28.1.1827 at Upton Cum Chalvey.Buckinghamshire
On the 1861 census her birthplace is Windsor ,but the 1851 definitely says Hampshire and I think it is ? minster and I would go for Siminster or Liminster.

Their child Louisa bapt New Windsor 6.10.1833 stone mason, 2  union court

And like you I see Oken Surrey.

Sorry

How about the possibility of Winsor, Hamps? (As opposed to Windsor... Is pronounced the same.)
