The Missing Hunt Brothers of Chertsey, Surrey
« on: Thursday 17 February 22 15:53 GMT (UK) »
The family I am researching is the Hunt family of Chertsey at the beginning of the 20th Century, part of a lost branch of this family, I have been searching for information and primarily photographs. In particular the sons of William Robert Hunt and Eleanor Hunt nee. Heath Harris:

• Richard Henry, born 1882
• William Herbert, born 1886
• Archibald Thomas, born 1888
• Frederick Charles, born 1892

All brothers fought in WW1, Richard and Herbert served with the East Surrey Regiment and killed in France. I know pretty much everything about these two as they became somewhat famous. However, I have been unable to trace the two surviving brothers, if they were to have descendants it would be my only hope of learning more.

Frederick served in the first lifeguards, wounded in 1914, and transferred to the Guards Machine Gun Regiment in May 1918. After the war, he returned to his widowed mother's home at 33 Grove Road, Chertsey where we set up business as a cabinet maker. Other than this I know nothing about the man until his death on the 27th of February 1964, the England & Wales, National Probate Calendar (Index of Wills and Administrations) declares that he died in the Woking Hotel in Surrey (now demolished) and left a sum of money to an Archibald Hunt, listed as a 'General Manager', from this I presume he did not marry or have children.

Archibald served with the No 8 Mountain Battalion Royal Garrison Artillery in India when the 1911 census was taken, I am unaware of his military service in WW1. In 1923 he was living in 33 Grove Road with his mother Ellen. A number of electoral registers have an Archibald T. Hunt and a Shelagh Hunt living in Surrey up until the 1960's. If this is my Archibald Hunt there is a possibility he had children with Shelagh.

I should say that I recently found a photo of Richards son listed on eBay when he served in WW2, the seller told me that it came from a house clearance but could not give the location, saying he works in the East Midlands area, mainly Notts, Derbyshire Leicestershire & South Yorkshire. I have no relatives there so it could be possible he visited a brother or descendant while he was serving.

If there is anything that can be found I would be greatly appreciative. As I mentioned I know quite a bit about the two older brothers and their mother and have built somewhat of a family tree should that help.

Thank you for your time.

There was a birth in 1922 Chertsey area for an Archibald T Hunt mmn Horton - I think that this will be the one you have found on ER's, he married in the 1950's

Archibald died 1 September 1921 at Kintampo, Gold Coast (now Ghana) while serving with the Gold Coast Regiment, West Africa Frontier Force (possibly on secondment from RGA). Military Medal, mention in despatches. 1404213. 30521

He should appear on the 1921 census and the 1939 register so those are 2 more sources of information for him.

Do you have an exact date of birth for Frederick?

There was one born 4 Jun 1892 who married.  Might not be your man though.

If this is the information showing on the Wills website and you do not have the actual will then the Archibald Hunt mentioned would be the executor and not necessarily the benefactor

ADDED
Do you have the death certificate.  I see his home address was Pyrford so not far away, perhaps he just out for a drink at the hotel on his way home.  The Albion was situated opposite the railway station entrance.

It was the Albion Hotel. There was no Will and therefore no bequest. Administration was granted to Archibald Thomas Hunt.

I saw it on ancestry attached to him, is there a website that would tell me more? Regardless I think it is too much of a coincidence that Frederick Charles left money to an Archibald and not be the brothers I am searching for. I was unaware of an address, I was worried Frederick died in the hotel due to a lack of family and money so if true this is a relief. I don't have a death certificate unfortunately.

So we know Archibald did not die in 1921, considering he was still living with his mother in 1923. Is there any more information that can be gathered from this?

That was Frederick's eldest son. Frederick Charles Hunt married Elizabeth Horton at Portsea in 1920.
