Whilst I was busy puzzling over the image, I see that Arranroots has probably solved it for you!

I was thinking along the lines of '.....Hips' but maybe the entry does refer to the location of 'Maderson'.

Initially, I thought that Mr LOWTHER may have come from Madeira.....so I took a look at an earlier census. No clues there!

I've said it before, I'll say it again, those Enumerators certainly know how to test us!

Good luck!

Now I am not so sure!

There is a Maddiston in Scotland or a Maddison Close in richmond, but no clue to what is written there!

The "P" in the word Poplar does look like the last bit of the mystery word(s) and I could convince myself it says hips.  As for the first bit ???

You could try asking the image provider for a better view of it - they can be quite helpful?

I also looked at earlier/ later censuses, but didn;t help me either!

Sorry I should have said, I was off looking at Meldrews website  ;D James was born in Madeira -

...now is that an ailment/illness or does it refer to his birthplace.  I'm not going to say what I think it is - yet :D I'd like some more ideas please, just to add he was 60 and working as a labourer, he was previously a Mariner.

I think the first letter of the first word is an E.
The second word looks like it could be Hope, but does that make sense?
Hmmm...

...and I think it's written in a different hand from the rest of the page, so it's not really possible to compare letter forms.
The writing resembles the word "Plaistow" that's been written in the previous column a bit further down the page.  Not that that helps anyone!!  ::)

For what it's worth ;D  I agree with you PrueM I think the information has been added in a different hand, and I thought it said "City Hope" thought maybe to clarify what part of Madeira he came from, but I can not find any place on the Island that would "fit" - in Spanish Hope is Esperar ???

...AND again... ;D

I've just had a better look.  Could the first word be City?
