McMillan's of Killean Parish
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 14:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi folks,

Looking for help finding out if Archibald McMillan is the same man, or two different men.

Mary McMillan, Single, 77yo, died 19th Dec 1856 at Tayinloan in Killean. Daughter of Hugh McMillan (Ag. Lab) & Betsey McMillan. Registered by Archibald McMillan, brother, Beachmenach, not present.

My 5xGG was Hugh McMillan, married Mary McMillan 3rd Apr 1799 at Killean Parish. Hugh a resident of Culfuar & Mary of Ruada. They had a son called Archibald in April 1801, died 28th Aug 1858 at Beachmunach. So I am wondering if Hugh is either a brother for Mary who died in 1856 or a father to Mary who died in 1856.

So I am wondering if Archibald (brother of Mary) & Archibald (Son of Hugh & Mary) are uncle and nephew or if they are the same man, meaning that Hugh McMillan married twice, first to Betsey & then to Mary. I can't find another Archibald McMillan in the census living in Beachme/unach apart from the man who died in 1858.

Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks, Keelan.

NB - Hugh McMillan & Betsey (Elizabeth McMillan) had several children, their youngest being Florence McMillan 1796 (married McLachlan) who died in 1877, and I share a DNA match with a descendant of hers.

Who registered Archibald's death?

Have you looked at the 1851 census to see how many Archibald McMillans of the right age there are in Killean? And 1861 to see how many are still there?

Hi Keelan

There is only one Archibald showing on the 1855 Valuation Rolls in the area:

ARCHIBALD MACMILLAN
Tenant Occupier
TAYCHROMAN
KILLEAN AND KILKENZIE
1855
VR008900001-

So happens there are two deaths in 1858:

Aged 36
Mother's maiden name LANGWELL
519/ 17
Killean and Kilchenzie

Aged 57
Mother's maiden name MCMILLAN
519/ 15
Killean and Kilchenzie

Mary's death in 1856 gives as you know her mother's maiden name as McMillan which matches what you have for her parents.

The 1851 census has this entry which I though by age, fits with the death in 1858:

Archd Mcmillan 49 labourer b. Killean
Magsie Mcmillan 20 daughter
Hugh Mcmillan 17 son

Address: North Beachmenach, Killean

What was the age of Archibald who died 1858, what are all the details on the cert?

I wonder if Taychroman and North Beachmeanoch are different names for the same place?

See https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.62655&lon=-5.66816&layers=5&b=1

BTW Beach.... in these place names has nothing to do with a sandy shore. It's Gaelic, but I'm not quite sure exactly what it means.
