Dodge family of Boldre, Hampshire.
« on: Monday 21 February 22 12:40 GMT (UK) »
I am researching the Sheppard family of Boldre. I have a Joseph Sheppard (many different spellings of surname) born 1790 Portsea / Portsmouth, son of Joseph Sheppard and Sarah Trowbridge (married 1789 Boldre) - Joseph was a blacksmith living Boldre area (Portmore or Greenmore) -  who married a lady called Maria or Mary - I believe her surname to be Drodge but am unable to find a marriage. There first child listed was Harry born 1818 Boldre registration.  Has anyone else come across this family.  Thanking you.

Hiya Jue and a warm welcome to Rootschat
Have you seen Maria on the 1841-1881 census returns - if so - does it say where she was born ??
I can't find a  record that fits in Hampshire - i WONDER IF THEY MARRIED OUT OF THE COUNTY IN MARIAS Parish church ?
I have however found Harry Baptism and it is definitely MARIA

Joseph married Maria BOWER who was the illegitimate daughter of Sarah BOWER nee DRODGE.
(from Comyn's New Forest)

So the marriage could be under DRODGE or BOWER.

Just to add that Joseph may have been the illegitimate son of Sarah TROWBRIDGE (there was a lot of illegitimacy in the New Forest).

I have yet to find a marriage under any name  ???

Sarah later had another illegitimate daughter, Anne. in 1801.

Comyn said that Robert BOWER had a former wife living at Itchen Ferry.

Closest marriage I can see - Joseph Shepherd married a Mary Bowers 5/2/1816 Alverstoke, Hampshire - witnesses John Lear and Ann Bowers.

Every child baptised to Joseph states wife as Maria.

Maria Sheppard bc.1796 buried 30/8/1839 Boldre - this explains why no sign of her on 1841 census.

Think Joseph remarried in Mar.qtr. 1845 to a Mary Perry or Mary Young who is the wife in 1851.

I reckon that's it. Her sister was called Ann.

Comyn has their first child baptised 2nd June 1816, so Mary/Maria would have been pregnant when they married.

Thank you all so much -

Just digesting all the information it all makes sense, guessing I need to arrange a visit to Hampshire Records to check out this book 'Comyns' it sounds like a very informative read for people researching parts of the New Forest.

The family connection - James born 1838 Portmore Common, Boldre may well of been Maria's last child then before she died, like you all mentioned on the 1851 its Joseph and Mary.

1861 census James is living with the family of his future wife Emma Furner -

I will let you know how I get on.

Thanking you once again,

Jue
