Welcome to Rootschat

Have you found William on any census with his parents?

Who was William's mother & what was her maiden name?

The only Andrew Carruthers I can see was b Scotland 1830 & died Durham 1909

There is no census entry for a William Carruthers with a father Andrew

Welcome to RootsChat.

Is this your family in 1901 in Ireland?
You will see that Andrew Carruthers is born in County Down, not South Shields
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Down/Pottinger/Wyndford_Street/1221496/

William and family in 1911 Ireland. This census suggests he was born abt. 1858.

You need to confirm that this is the Andrew and William Carruthers that you are looking at. :)

The only birth registration I can find for a William Carruthers in Sth Shield is in March quarter 1856.  Mothers maiden name - LAMBERT.
This is NOT the son of Andrew though. I believe parents are William Carruthers and Frances Lambert married in 1852.

Here is the second marriage on 17 Oct 1886 for Andrew Carruthers in Belfast  to Mary Murray, nee Burns. Andrew is a widower, boiler maker, age 56, (birth year abt 1830). His father is Samuel, a farmer.
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/marriage_returns/marriages_1886/10847/5960509.pdf

So if he was married at the time in the 1881 census, his wife possibly died in England between 1881 and 86.

His second wife Mary died in 1894
