John Mitchell and Sarah Susannah Mitchell (nee Anderson)
I need help with trying to trace these ancestors and those before them as I’ve basically hit the wall. Here’s what I know about them:
John Mitchell (from death certificate):
Born probably around 1813 in Bury, Huntingdonshire. Father was James Mitchell, a cordwainer. Mother was Frances Mitchell (nee Marshall). John died 9 September 1895 in 22 Arthur Street, South Yarra, Melbourne, of apoplexy (4 days) aged 77 years.
Sarah Susannah Mitchell (nee Anderson) (from death certificate):
Born probably around 1813 in Ramsey, Huntingdonshire. Father Robert Anderson, a bricklayer. Mother Anne Anderson (nee Mitchell). Sarah died 28 April 1889 in South Yarra, Melbourne, of fatty degeneration of the heart and liver (2 months) aged 68 years.
Married probably 1836. John’s death certificate says in Bury; Sarah’s death certificate says in Ramsay. Both death certificates record that they were married aged 16 years, which appears to be incorrect.
Census data show that both were aged 28 years in 1841 and that they and their (then) three children were all born in Middlesex. 1841 address given as Elizabeth Place, Shoreditch and John’s occupation given as carpenter.
Children (confirmed from both death certificates):
William (b. 1837 in Middlesex)
Emma Ann (b. 1840 in Middlesex)
Henry (b. 1842 possibly at 29 Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate, Spitalfields, London - 1844) Not
mentioned on John’s death certificate but recorded on Sarah’s.
Robert Anderson (b. 1844 possibly at 29 Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate, Spitalfields, London – 16
August 1936)
John (b. 1847 possibly at 29 Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate, Spitalfields, London – 1892 aged 45)
Marshall (1 July 1849 at 29 Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate, Spitalfields, London according to birth
certificate – 2 September 1893)
Francis Anderson (b. 1851– 1936 in Portland, N.S.W.)
Family emigrated to Australia in 1854, arriving in March aboard the Asiatic. John not listed on the passenger list (he might have come out earlier on another ship).
Despite extensive searching I don’t have anything about the family before this other than sketchy information about James and Frances Mitchell; nor do I have any links to helpful Bishops’ Transcripts. If anyone is able to help me to find out more I’d really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Peter
