:-[Not sure about the wind direction but we do say of a fierce Easterly wind that it was coming “ straight off the Urals”.
However ,just as when I was little and you saw in the cinema The Pathe News
showing racing on what looked like a circular route,the term “ each way “
meant it did not matter which way round a horse ran,clockwise or anti clockwise,because some horses did not behave at the start ,so people could place a bet on the horse running either way!
