Which prison/hulk held Joseph Caudwell in 1843/4?

Hi all

I have a Joseph Caudwell who was. convicted of horse stealing and transported to Australia in 1844 aboard the London

just wondering where he was held prior to his transportation.

He was convitted 2 Jan 1844 at Derby.Born 1796 ploughman and farmer ,guilty of horse theft and got 10 years.He was transported 15 th March so he had to be got from Derby to the port of London in just under 2 months ,so whereever he was held it wasn't for too long.

Where & when was his trial? 

Which British Colony was he transported to? 

Until 1901 Australia really only referred to the continent,  so the name of colony he was transported to, Should lead you to the state based archives.  Most convict records are readily available online. So, for example,  if he was transported to Van Diemens Land, then the Tasmanian State Archives will be useful in noting where he was tried.  Once you know that, it is a much smaller step to finding where he was initially held, prison/prison hulk.

Sometimes a close read of the Convict Archives  can include how/from which the prisoner was delivered  to the transport ship.

FindMyPast's papers include a petition for clemency raised by the Rev Howard Fuzill (?), signed by 9 farmers who knew him when he held a farm in the Parish of Normanton and 15 respectable persons of the Parish.

The Rev Fuzill refers to " ... an honest industrious man and of good character ...... with a wife and eleven children nearly dependant upon him"

Nottingham Review & General Advertiser for the Midland Counties, 2 Feb 1844
"DERBY COUNTY GAOL - The following prisoners left the Gaol on Tuesday morning by the railway, to be delivered over to the Governor of the Millbank Prison, London, there to remain until their several sentences of transportation can be further carried into execution, viz.: - ......"

6 names listed including "Joseph Caudwell, 10 years".

There's a lengthy report of his trial in the Derbyshire Courier, 6 January 1844. This time it mentions 18 children.
