Arthur Nunneley b. 1882 Completed
« on: Friday 04 March 22 14:17 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm trying to find out what happened to Arthur Nunneley, b. 1883 (Modified sorry 1882) Woodford, Essex.

His parents were Charles Nunneley, b.1848 and Janet nee Taylor, b. 1849

Arthur is with his family in 1891. In 1901 he is in South Africa in the Boer War. He is there for three years, leaving in 1902, and his papers show him to have been a clerk in civilian life.

I don't know what happened to him after that but

in 1903 an Arth. Nunneley age 20, clerk leaves Liverpool on the Friesland for Philadelphia.

Then on the 1910 US census there is an Arthur Nunneley, b. c1884, a labourer, boarding in Ione, Stevens, Washington. That record states that he arrived in 1907.

I don't know whether either of these sightings in my Arthur or not but I wondered if anyone would be able to tell me more about the Arthur/s of these two entries.

I do know that his brother, William, went to Canada at some point as he is serving in a Canadian Regiment when he dies in 1916 in France.

Thank-you
Brie

On the passenger list with Arthur Nunneley was a William Nunneley 2 years younger than Arthur with occupation Policeman. Both men give last place of residence as Woodford. They also give their place of birth as Woodford.

William had been a member of the 40th Squadron, 10th Battalion, Imperial Yeomanry. He had been discharged 6 Jan 1902. His father Charles Nunneley.

RayDen,

Thank-you. I hadn't seen the original passenger list. It fits perfectly. Arthur had a brother, William, two years younger. Their father was Charles.

William subsequently fetched up in Canada.

So I now know for definite that the 1903 record belongs to my Arthur.

Thank-you for your help.

Rayden,

Sorry, were you looking at the 1903 record for the Friesland? I have just gone to look at the original but can't see William.

and while I was typing....... :)  your post came in! Thank-you, so it fits with the information on the 1910 census. I wonder if William had departed for Canada by then leaving Alfred behind.

Just found a border crossing from USA to Canada July 1904 for a A Nunnaley (Clerk) age 22 years who states that he landed in Philadelphia on 13 April 1903 on the ship Friesland.

On that Passenger list Arthur gives his last address as S Woodford and that he intends going onward to Canada

The border crossing in 1904 gives a birth of July 1882, same as the WWI Draft & CADI records.

RJ137 Thank-you, I only found the 1910 census on Family Search. I will have a look through all these, it looks very positive.

RayDen, the 1903 passenger list was on FindMyPast but it was the Friesland in 1903. I'll re-check but it looks like you have tailed my man!

Thank-you both
