Looking for Condon family
« on: Sunday 06 March 22 15:22 GMT (UK) »
My great grandmother was Sarah Ann Condon born 26/12/1862 in Portsea Portsmouth Hampshire.  Her parents were John Condon and Charlotte Evans. On the census 1841 John was born in 1821 Marylebone but other years census it changes the year he was born.  I know he was a bricklayers labour but trying to take it back further.  I can't find a lot of information about the family.

I can't find the marriage of these two.  I know they were in service.  I know the three younger children were born Greenwich and Camden.

Anita - Welcome to Rootschat from me also.

You mention his age in 1841 and then it changing on subsequent census records. Just in case you don't know (and please forgive me if you do) -- in 1841 the ages of people over 15 were rounded DOWN to the nearest 5 years. The ages of children 15 and under - should be correct, at age last birthday.

This is the ONLY census were the rounding down occurred. On all others the ages should be 'age last birthday'.

Thank you I didn't know that.  I did wonder if he was born in a workhouse due not much information about parents.

I did see that my great great aunt Mary Ann marriage certificate had John James Condon.

I don't know if this is relevant, but in 1851 (albeit he was a Lodger) - his birthplace is shown as Ireland!

Certainly there seem to be a lot of people named Condon who were born in Ireland -- maybe his parents were Irish.

I can't find an 1851 or 1861 entry for a Charlotte Evans b Portsmouth Hants.  Given she was 41 in 1871 so was 33 when Sarah was born I wondered if she was previously married.

The children's births will show her maiden name but she will have married under her previous married name

However - I can't see a John Condon marriage to a Charlotte

If they did marry - his fathers name would be on the marriage cert

Looking at a family tree on Ancestry Charlotte was baptized 9 years before she was born.

If her born name was Evans it needs careful work.

As Carole says the births of her children should show her maiden name.
