Date please, CdV of couple, by McAllan of Hexham

I'd appreciate opinions on the date of this one please.

The design on the reverse depicts the newly created Beaumont Street and the Queen's Hall in Hexham , and must therefore post-date 1866.

I cannot work out the woman's headgear at all  :-\

Would I be right in thinking the photo is late 1860's?

No restoration needed, and I have full biographical details on the photographer  :)

Hi Jennifer

The back and the  geometric pattern of her clothing and his beard suggests late 60s but I've not seen the setting in this period. Hmm..

I've just looked at Pols on settings. He suggests  very late 1860s and into the 70s.

Hi, what are you referring to here (Pols)?

Also, did settings originate in London and diffuse into the provinces?

I just found the relevant bit in my Jayne Shrimpton book, where she say that 'carefully contrived' naturalistic settings began to be the vogue very late 1860's, which fits exactly with what you say.
She also mentions the use of a 'distant view', bark-covered fences, gates and stiles, softened by grass ferns and leaves, all of which seem to appear here.

Alan - it's the author of a book on photo dating. Look him up.  And some politeness would be welcome

Apologies, I didn't mean to be abrupt.
