1891 U K census John Dorrington b. 1852 'Whittlesea.'   Despite extensive search not found birth certificate and no record of him before 1891.

Bit of a long shot but could he have been born in Whittlesea Victoria and then come to the U K ?

Can Birth/Marriage Records for Whittlesea for 1850-1881 be accessed.  Any advice much appreciated.

1891 and 1901 census state Cambridgeshire.

Do you have the marriage cert for his father's occupation and to see if he was previously married?

There is a "Whittlesey" in Cambridgeshire - perhaps that's the birthplace?

December 26 1885, at parish church, St Mary, Hitchin
James Dorrington, 31, widower, engineer, Father: James Dorrington ,labourer  Unfortunately I cannot make out James' residence - perhaps Taylors Lane?
Amy Thomason 21, spinster, residence: Bedford Rd Father:  Thomas Thomason, night watchman
Witnesses: Thomas Thomason, Rosey Thomason

(There is currently a Taylors Rd reasonably near)
