I am baffled by so many Mulcares in the Limerick area who have the same first names. I am looking for my great-grandfather Owen Mulcare born in 1838, son of Michael Mulcare and Mary Stokes. Married Margaret O'Keefe in Ireland before immigration around 1860. (Had US land grant in 1870) Brother James Mulcair married Hannah Neville and lived in Killea townland and is buried at Bohernakill outside Adare. These are known facts based on multiple records in the US. I can find no record of him or Margaret in Ireland. These are loose ends I would like to fix. There is some speculation that he may be a half-brother to the multiple brothers and sisters who emigrated to Indiana.
Also some ancestry.com records confuse him with another Owen Mulcare who moved to Australia. He wasn't from that branch of the family.
I'll be grateful for any advice! Thanks in advance

There is really no substitute for a careful stepping back through the generations.
What are the names of the children of Owen Mulcare?
What are the names of the children of his brother James?
Looking at these names may give you a clue as to which people may have been their parents or grandparents.

The Irish did have a naming pattern. They did not follow it as slavishly as some Scottish folk but you can still see it in many families.

A traditional naming pattern was often used by Irish parents until the later 19th century:
First son usually named for the father's father.
Second son usually named for the mother's father.
Third son usually named for the father.
Fourth son usually named for the father's eldest brother.
etc etc

I use these sites
Family Search
https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/
https://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/
(the reason I use this is to search for the oldest inhabitants of the family name I am following, showing up in the census and then track their BDMs in the hope of getting a link to 'my' names
https://registers.nli.ie/

To search in Ireland you need to know religion and the townland they came from.

1   I always make a list of all the spelling variations of the name and search for them
2   If I come across any list of names from Ireland I search in it even if they may not look promising eg lists of dog licences etc

If your family migrated to the US then one of the first tasks I would do is to find the ship/date/where it left from and arrived.  Look carefully at those who came as they may be from the same region/town.

What are the dates for James?

There is a death notice on
https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1891/06076/4733058.pdf

for James Mulcair reported by his son Owen? Is this your James?

There is a James Mulcair in Killea in 1901 census aged 53 and married to Hannah.

And an Owen Mulcair aged 76 with wife Johanna in Ballylin and they had been married for 47 years, had 10 children and 8 living. a son Michael is still living with them

This maypossibly be Mary Stokes Mulcair dying aged 86 in 1899. The registration district is Rathkeale.

She is a widow and the death was reported by a g/daughter also Mary Mulcair.

This could be looked at further as a death in 1896 for Michael Mulcaire but NB he is shown as a widower so it does not match with the details of Mary above who died later.  He died aged 85 in Killea and his death is reported by his dau in law Hannah Mulcair.

The parish records for Croagh and Rathkeale go back earlier than 1838.  If you have birth dates that are more exact than 1838 you may find the birth of Owen Mulcair.

You mention half siblings.

There is this marriage - Mary is transcribed as Hakes on one site but I think it could be Stokes.
16th February 1844. If it is correct, then Owen would have a different mother if he was born c 1838.

There are baptisms to this couple which might be the Indiana ones you refer to.

There is a baptism which you will have noted, I am sure
Owen Mulcare 1st January 1841 - parents Michael and Catherine (Nestor).
